Why are the new growths on my prickly pear cactus long & thin?

I live in indiana & got my prickly pear last year from a friends yard. It did good all winter, now some of the pads died & I have 2 new long ones growing. They have green/white nubs on them. are they roots? It's in a small pot with sand that it was growing in in the yard.
