How to cover ugly hard wood walls?

I'm 17 and my mother and I are moving out of a rental house into a house that she bought. My bedroom will be in the basement and the walls are covered in bulky stained hardwood. I find them repulsive but my mother loves them and since I won't be living there that long she won't let me take them down or paint them. I'm looking for a clever way to cover or hide them without damaging them. I've thought about putting drywall over them but we aren't sure if the basement leaks, it looks like it does. Suggestions?
