When I cast on to knit, should my loops be criss-crossed?

I've tried watching numerous videos on youtube to learn how to cast on and knit a first row. I'm trying to make a simple scarf. When I cast one side of the loop is normal and the other is criss-crossed. Is this normal? Is their any website or tutorial that helps step by step for beginner knitters?
