I am having renameing problems?

every time i re-name a file it would usually say the format name at the end(jpg,mp3,wav,mpeg,)and when i choose to re-name it doesn't format it.(if i delete the format name at the end it willnot work properly)i want it to where you don'thave to put the format name an the end i wnt it to where it does it for you
